The lake is known for its breathtaking beauty, clear waters and surrounding mountain ranges, including the Remarkables.     Location and geography:

    Lake Wakatipu is the third largest lake in New Zealand and stretches over 80 kilometres in a shape.

    The lake lies in a glacial valley and is surrounded by the Southern Alps and the Remarkables.

    Tidal fluctuations: The lake has a unique tidal fluctuation where the water level rises and falls by about 20 centimetres every 25 minutes. This phenomenon is known as ‘seiches’.

    Māori legend: The lake has deep spiritual significance for the Māori people. According to legend, the lake was created by the heart of the giant Matau, who lay sleeping and was burnt to death by a young woman. The shape of the lake is said to represent the giant's body.
